Kamala Harris' Secret Service protection revoked by Trump

(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump has revoked former Vice President Kamala Harris' Secret Service detail after it was extended by former President Joe Biden, a White House official told NewsNation on Friday.

Harris received six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office, as mandated by federal law. That period ended on July 21. However, her detail had been extended for an additional year through a directive quietly signed by Biden shortly before leaving office, according to a Harris team member.

That extension is set to be suspended by the Trump administration on Monday, a senior White House official said.

Security protections for Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, ended July 21, the Harris team member said.

NewsNation reached out to the Secret Service for comment.

In March, Trump ended the Secret Service protection details assigned to Biden’s adult children, which the former president had extended to July shortly before leaving office in January.

Former presidents and their spouses receive lifelong Secret Service protection under federal law, but the protection afforded to their immediate family members over the age of 16 ends when they leave office.

Outgoing presidents can extend protection for those who might otherwise not be eligible for up to six months after they leave office, a provision Trump also directed for his family after leaving office in 2021. Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush also extended protection for family members for a period.
