A Hong Kong lawmaker has been fined HK$2,000 and banned from driving for one month after being filmed driving on the wrong side of a road in Wan Chai in January.

Judy Chan, a New People’s Party lawmaker, appeared at Eastern Magistrates’ Courts on Monday. She pleaded guilty to one count of careless driving.

Magistrate David Ko said Chan’s offence was “premeditated,” and that the duration of her offence was not short.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Chan said she regretted her actions and has been taking public transport instead of driving.

“Since the incident occurred, I have stopped driving. I also promised the [magistrate] that I won’t offend again,” she told reporters in Cantonese.

Chan was filmed driving down the wrong side of Jaffe Road in Wan Chai in late January, where two fire engines were parked.

At the time, Chan said she was rushing to a meeting. She also apologised for making a “wrong judgement,” went to a police station and gave a statement to officers.

Reporters filmed Chan leaving the court via Sai Wan Ho MTR station after the hearing.

On Sunday, Legislative Council (LegCo) president Starry Lee told reporters that the legislature’s Supervisory Committee was reviewing Chan’s case and would issue a formal response afterwards.

The Supervisory Committee can issue different degrees of sanctions following investigations, ranging from a written warning to suspension from service and deduction of a lawmaker’s remuneration.
