(NewsNation) — A Washington, D.C., man accused of throwing a sandwich at a Customs and Border Protection agent was charged with assaulting a federal officer Wednesday.
The man, who officials identified as 37-year-old Sean Charles Dunn, was charged with "felony assault on a federal officer," FBI Director Kash Patel said in a social media post.
The incident, which was captured on video and went viral, occurred late Sunday as the White House ramped up law enforcement patrols in Washington this week.
According to a court filing, Dunn approached CBP agents near 11 p.m., pointed a finger at one, called him a “fascist” and threw a “sub-style” sandwich at the agent’s chest. Dunn allegedly shouted, “Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!” before attempting to run away. He was quickly apprehended, police said.
Dunn was also fired from his job at the Justice Department, Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a social media post Thursday. He was an international affairs specialist in the DOJ's criminal division, according to a department official who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss a personnel matter.
"This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ," Bondi wrote. “You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement.”
The Justice Department still employs a former FBI agent who was charged with joining the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021, siege, according to the AP. The former FBI supervisory agent, Jared Lane Wise, is serving as a counselor to DOJ pardon attorney Ed Martin Jr., who was a leading figure in Trump’s campaign to overturn the 2020 election.
The incident coincided with Trump’s push to deploy National Guard troops and more federal officers to the capital, citing crime concerns. However, city leaders point to statistics showing violent crime at a 30-year low.
