Multiple colleges, including 5 HBCUs, announce lockdowns amid threats

(NewsNation) — At least six colleges, including five Historically Black Colleges and Universities, are under lockdown Thursday, after reporting threats against the campuses had been received and or were nearby.

In a social media post on Thursday, Virginia State University announced a lockdown was "out of an abundance of caution," with students advised to check their school emails for updates. Southern University and Alabama State University also announced a lockdown, adding that "Campus Police, along with other law enforcement agencies, are actively clearing all buildings on campus." Hampton University and Bethune-Cookman University announced classes would be cancelled Thursday and Friday, with students being advised not to come to campus.

As of Thursday afternoon, it was unclear what the threats against the HBCUs were in relation to.

Meanwhile, Stockton University in New Jersey also told its students to shelter in place at 1:19 p.m. in response to an off-campus shooting.
