(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump said he foresees a possible ceasefire in the war in Gaza coming soon.

“We think within the next week we're going to get a ceasefire,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Friday.

Ending the war has been one of Trump’s top priorities. “I think it’s close,” he said.

The Qatari government is also working to negotiate an end to the war. In an exclusive interview with NewsNation, Majed Al-Ansari, the senior adviser to the Qatari prime minister, said they are working “day and night.”

"The person who's handling the negotiations day to day is our prime minister. Under the leadership of His Highness, we have been working in this region with everybody,” Ansari said. “Nobody wants eternal war. There are no people around the world that want to be under rockets, under fire. You know, afraid for their lives, afraid for their children's lives.”

Though Israel and Hamas could reach a deal in the war in Gaza, other actors in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Iran could escalate Middle East tensions.

Sirens sounded in southern Israel Saturday morning, likely due to a missile launch coming from the Houthis in Yemen, according to the Israeli Defense Force. The country had also been in conflict with Iran earlier this month, exchanging drone strikes, which the United States aided with.

Iran issued a new threat overnight, with Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi writing on X, “The great and powerful Iranian people who showed the world that the Israeli regime had no choice but to run to Daddy to avoid being flattened by our missiles. Do not take kindly to threats and insults.”
