Trump signals plans for new Russia sanctions after attack on Ukraine

(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump said he's not happy about the latest strikes on Ukraine as crews still pick through the rubble of the single largest attack of the war.

"I'm not happy. I'm not happy about the whole situation, the one that I thought would have been, for me, the easiest because of Putin," Trump told reporters Sunday. "I thought that would have been, it's not. It's not turned out that way. But we're going to get it done."

More than 800 drones were fired in Kyiv early Sunday morning, damaging the Council of Ministers building, which is where the prime minister's office is located, and next door is the presidential palace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the West for a tough response.

"Clearly, Russia is trying to inflict pain on Ukraine with even more brazen attacks. This is a clear sign that Putin is testing the world whether they will accept or tolerate this," Zelenskyy wrote on X. "That is why it is important that the statements by leaders be backed by strong actions. Sanctions against Russia and individuals associated with Russia, tough tariffs and other restrictions on trade with Russia."

Trump is weighing the possibility of placing new sanctions on Russia, like secondary tariffs, oil distributions and banks.

A European delegation is expected to be in Washington, D.C., Monday, the Associated Press reported. European officials will visit the U.S. Treasury to discuss economic pressures.

In response to the possibility of sanctions, the Kremlin has accused Ukraine and Europe of attempting to draw the United States into their orbit, saying no sanctions will be able to change their position.
