WV National Guard deploys to DC to help Trump's crime crackdown

(NewsNation) — The West Virginia National Guard will deploy between 300 to 400 National Guardsmen to Washington, D.C., at the direction of Gov. Patrick Morrisey to support President Donald Trump's D.C. crime initiative.

A small number of troops are expected to arrive in D.C. Saturday, West Virginia Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Jim Seward told NewsNation and will provide equipment and specialized training.

“This initiative aligns with our values of service and dedication to our communities,” Seward said in a news release obtained by NewsNation. “We stand ready to support our partners in the National Capital Region and contribute to the collective effort of making our nation’s capital a clean and safe environment. The National Guard’s unique capabilities and preparedness make it an invaluable partner in this important undertaking.”

On Tuesday, Trump deployed hundreds of National Guard to D.C. to crack down on crime, he said, for the first time since 2020.

“West Virginia is proud to stand with President Trump in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation’s capital,” Gov. Morrisey said in a statement. “The men and women of our National Guard represent the best of our state, and this mission reflects our shared commitment to a strong and secure America."
